Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and chief of Army staff Asim Munir held a 90-minute meeting with United States President Donald Trump at the Oval Office, which was also attended by Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Top Pakistan government sources told CNN-News18 that the talks were “highly significant and security-focused”.

The sources further said that the meeting signals the beginning of “a new era of Pakistan-US strategic partnership and economic cooperation.”
What did Shehbaz Sharif, Munir and Trump discuss?

According to top Pakistan government sources cited by CNN-News18, the Oval office discussions varied beyond security – from economic engagement, counterterrorism and investment opportunities. The United States reportedly showed strong interest in Pakistan’s rare earth minerals, potential in crypto mining, and prospects for oil exploration.
This was the first formal bilateral interaction between Trump and Sharif, coming six years after former premier Imran Khan met Trump during the latter’s first term in July 2019.

As per the sources, the two countries agreed to move ahead with a broader cooperation framework that combines security, economics, and strategic partnership.
The meeting, which was closed to the press, was scheduled to start at 4:30 pm (local time) but was delayed by about 30 minutes due to President Trump’s engagements.
The Pakistani delegation arrived on time but had to wait briefly before the meeting began. According to a statement by the Pakistan Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) the meeting was held in a “pleasant atmosphere”.
US-Pak comprehensive agreement soon?

According to sources cited by CNN-News18, United States and Pakistan are likely to sign a comprehensive agreement soon. The deal, they pointed, would cover security and strategic partnerships, a counterterrorism alliance, and investments in rare earth mineral extraction and oil exploration.
This understanding, as per sources, marks the most ambitious effort in years to grow the relationship between the two countries on both security as well as economic fronts.
Rising terrorism
As per the top sources, cross-border terrorism emanating from Afghanistan, unrest in Balochistan and the situation in Kashmir also formed part of the discussions. President Trump, as per these sources, assured Prime Minister Shehbaz and Field Marshal Munir of “full US support and cooperation” to address terrorism threats originating from Afghan soil.
Joint counter-terrorism command
A major outcome of the discussion was the decision to establish a “joint counter-terrorism command” in Pakistan, sources told CNN-News18. The initiative, they pointed out, seeks to institutionalise counterterrorism collaboration between Washington and Islamabad.
Deliberations also examined the Taliban government in Afghanistan, China’s increasing sway in the region, and strategic matters tied to the Bagram Airbase.

Asim Munir also requested Trump for the restoration of US-Pakistan military training and exchange programs, which had been stopped during the previous US President Joe Biden’s time. President Trump, as per these accounts, gave a positive response and is considering reinstating them.
‘Pak-US ties gradually warming up’

At a media briefing in New York, a senior State Department official told Dawn that ties between Washington and Islamabad were “gradually warming up” in Trump’s second term.
The senior official emphasised that US relations with Pakistan were not tied to its partnership with India. “We have an independent relationship with Pakistan,” he told Dawn.
